"I thought," Mona said, in a small voice, "that Rire was a long way. I thought it wasn't safe, when I was little, to take me so far."
"Well, you're not so little as you were," said Amel.
Mira was standing in the jam of the door, feelings showing only in the bloodless tensions about her mouth and eyes.
"Come on!" Amel stood, and lifted Mona to sit on his left arm. "I'll take you to your room. I have to talk to your mother."
"I wish you were my daddy," Mona murmured, on his shoulder.
"Don't," he soothed. "You had a good daddy."
Worried about a coming clash over the throne, Amel wants to evacuate Mona and Mira to Rire. Raising questions from the child he's acted as uncle and surrogate father to for years.
