Okal Rel science fiction books - gender equality on the challenge floor among Vrellish fighters is a surprise to Demish woman

Writer-daughter Jennifer Lott's 2013 Xmas gift to Lynda Williams was an Okal Rel quote of the day stack for 2014, featuring intriguing snapshots of the ORU adventure from all titles in the series: Saga, Legacies and online.

From saga novel Pretenders by Lynda Williams.

Ayrium stepped into the open center of the witnessing circle, barefoot, in a Demish gown, and with a borrowed sword.

Horth grinned at her with a nod and stepped back, willing to be championed. He was shaking slightly in reaction to trauma and blood loss, and his sword hand was losing power.

Ayrium nodded back, conscious of the compliment he was paying her, in sharp contrast to the startled looks among the Demish men surrounding them.

Commentary

When Horth is challenged on a public square by angry Nesak retainers of his late mother, he takes a wound from the second challenger which might have left him vulnerable to a fatal engagement with the third. Shocked by the lack of honorable support shown Horth by male Demish onlookers of the kind she's found too aloof to take her on in exhibition challenges, Ayrium borrows Amra's sword to even up the situation by standing in for the wounded Horth. Being Vrellish, Horth has no problem accepting the help of a swords woman.
