The distinctions between who's right, who's wrong—and especially who can be trusted—get increasingly blurred as Shepherds of Sparrows reaches its climax. What seems to be a straightforward matter of us versus them becomes a multi-faceted struggle for power, and even when Nestor thinks he's got a handle on things, however tenuous, the situation spirals out of control once more.

In this illustration by Debbie Ha, we see Nestor encounter a deadly surprise after putting himself in mortal danger. The trap is sprung and enemies surround him. Find out what happens next, and whether or not Nestor needs Admiral Ackbar's help – in Shepherds of Sparrows - now available on amazon.com!

In this illustration by Debbie Ha, we see the wonder of discovery through the eyes of Voltan, who has finally found a way to put his hyperactive mind to good use. He explores and manipulates protein structure using interactive goggles and gloves—which he masters immediately. Although Prokhor, his mentor, showed Voltan the door, it’s almost as if the mentor is clutching on, trying not to be left behind.

The curse of Voltan’s genetics turns into an asset as he makes leaps and bounds in the research to end the war. It provides a little bit of calm for him, distracting him from all the tragedy long enough to begin the process of healing. And although he gazes intently at projected proteins, his thoughts and purpose remain to save his siblings and everyone else in the Grianach district.

Join in on Voltan's discoveries in Shepherds of Sparrows - now available on amazon.com.

Olivia and Voltan, brother and sister, bonded through the stories they read together growing up. Since their parents spent so much time running the spaceport that left Olivia as a surrogate mother for her youngest brother. In this illustration by Debbie Ha, we catch a glimpse of the possibility, the explorative nature of reading that allows two siblings to grow closer together. This is a scene before the events of the novel—before their world is turned upside down.

Voltan longs for these forms of escape with his sister as the situation in Grianach spirals out of control. He tries, on multiple occasions, to get her to sit down and read with him, but she's too consumed by the need to find their other brother, Pleo. Eventually Voltan seeks refuge elsewhere, to try and find another world, another place he can come to terms with. Olivia maintains her leadership role as a shepherd of other refugees.

In the end, the foundation provided by their childhood reading serves as a bedrock to help each other through the healing process. Never underestimate the power of reading.

Shepherds of Sparrows – The Multivision’d Promo

by Lynda Williams
Reality Skimming Press

RSP

This fall will see the release of Shepherds of Sparrows by Hal Friesen, the first title from Reality Skimming Press, and the introduction of a new tradition called the multivision’d promo.

Hal’s stories about Nestor, the Nersallian who fell in love with a Nesak, have appeared in Okal Rel Legacies titles Opus 3, Opus 4 and Opus 5, from the Absolute Xpress imprint of Hades Publications. Reality Skimming Press is stepping in to expand the story of the Okal Rel Universe.

Visit this blog weekly, from now through the end of 2013, to find out more about Nestor’s harrowing adventures assisting Di Mon, Liege of Monitum, with an outbreak of rogue science and a murderous backlash, on Monitum.

And experience what we mean by multivision.

For the promo, it means we’ll be illustrating scenes from Shepherds of Sparrows using the talents of more than one artist.

For books it means we plan to offer a choice of covers: character-focused ones and a Jeff Doten set featuring settings, instead.

Olivia, The Caddy, Dartha

As a sample, the composite image on the right offers two versions of Hal’s teenage heroine, Olivia, getting refugees to board a ship. Maja Madeline LaValley is the cover artist for the 2013 release of the book. Debbie Ha will be assisting in the promo.

Richard Bartrop portrayed Hal’s character, The Caddy, in the Opus anthology where he is introduced. And Yukari Yamamoto recently did the character sketch, at the lower right, of the ordinary-looking Lorel mastermind Dartha, who appears both in Shephards of Sparrows and in the concluding volume of the Okal Rel Saga, Part 10: Unholy Science, forthcoming from Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy.
