Men were hard and frightening compared to women. But from what Luthan had thus far been able to grasp from the sex manual, she couldn't help feeling their part in the operation was the more fragile and embarrassing one. And she couldn't quite bring herself to imagine Erien performing the function as if was laid out in the manual with anyone, let alone herself. Erien was always so serious and self-controlled.

"Horth," Hara demanded, "what did you do wrong?"

The question engaged Horth because that was exactly what he was trying to figure out. Zer Sarn had called him a Vrellish animal. Mother talked about the Vrellish error. Cook and Hara clearly felt that he had messed up, but rape was too severe a charge in Horth's opinion. He would never have hurt Alice. At least, he didn't think he would have.

Suddenly it occurred to him that only one person knew for sure how gravely his misconduct should be judged.

"Ask Alice," he told Hara.

Horth nodded.

"Gods, child!" Hangst exclaimed in frustration. "Say something to prove it to me, will you!"
