In September 2013, David K. Juniper created this dynamic logo for Reality Skimming press swag and promo. Lynda had asked for something that represented heroic, optimistic, saga-big story telling.

Here's how David K. Juniper explained the concept.

"We wanted to create something heroic and daring that encompassed major elements from the Okal Rel saga. So, we went with a rapier pointing upwards towards the sky with a rel ship skimming around the blade ( we are seeing some serious skim'facs here)." - David K. Juniper

In September 2013, Lynda asked the Reality Skimming Page for help in formulating a mission statement for Reality Skimming Press. (ETA for this mission statement is still Feb 2014.) Stephanie Ann Johanson's response, below, resonated with her own feelings. Sure, it's always great to reach a wider audience and gain respect for one's mission. But that's the icing. This feels a lot more like the "cake".

Shepherds of Sparrows – The Multivision’d Promo

by Lynda Williams
Reality Skimming Press

RSP

This fall will see the release of Shepherds of Sparrows by Hal Friesen, the first title from Reality Skimming Press, and the introduction of a new tradition called the multivision’d promo.

Hal’s stories about Nestor, the Nersallian who fell in love with a Nesak, have appeared in Okal Rel Legacies titles Opus 3, Opus 4 and Opus 5, from the Absolute Xpress imprint of Hades Publications. Reality Skimming Press is stepping in to expand the story of the Okal Rel Universe.

Visit this blog weekly, from now through the end of 2013, to find out more about Nestor’s harrowing adventures assisting Di Mon, Liege of Monitum, with an outbreak of rogue science and a murderous backlash, on Monitum.

And experience what we mean by multivision.

For the promo, it means we’ll be illustrating scenes from Shepherds of Sparrows using the talents of more than one artist.

For books it means we plan to offer a choice of covers: character-focused ones and a Jeff Doten set featuring settings, instead.

Olivia, The Caddy, Dartha

As a sample, the composite image on the right offers two versions of Hal’s teenage heroine, Olivia, getting refugees to board a ship. Maja Madeline LaValley is the cover artist for the 2013 release of the book. Debbie Ha will be assisting in the promo.

Richard Bartrop portrayed Hal’s character, The Caddy, in the Opus anthology where he is introduced. And Yukari Yamamoto recently did the character sketch, at the lower right, of the ordinary-looking Lorel mastermind Dartha, who appears both in Shephards of Sparrows and in the concluding volume of the Okal Rel Saga, Part 10: Unholy Science, forthcoming from Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Brian Hades and Lynda Williams are pleased to announce the formation of a new and independent publishing venture ...

Reality Skimming Press

With Lynda's 10-novel Okal Rel Saga nearly completed, Lynda Williams decided it was time to pursue a new dream: publishing others who share her love of heroes.

"Optimistic SF is what I like," she explained her vision. "Stories that confront the work of being human with a will to find meaning in the struggle."

Her own work has been characterized as space opera because of the emphasis on the lives, loves and decisions of the characters. "Amel, Horth, Vretla and the rest of the cast are what it's about," she said. "I like to think of it as modem epic: the story of heroes confronting big challenges." Those stories play out against a background of socially and biologically constructed questions of sexual identity, status struggles among human and post-human sub-groups, and questions like the ethics of modifying personality through medical intervention.

Although writing has been a life-long preoccupation for Williams, leadership has run a close second. For example, she launched one of Canada's first public internet organizations in the 1990s as president of the Prince George FreeNet and a member of Telecommunities Canada.

"And I've always been interested in publishing," said Williams. "I managed an academic press in the mid-2000s (UNBC Press), produced an online literary journal for ten years (Reflections on Water) and have been running the Reality Skimming Blog, in its current form, since 2010."

Reality Skimming Press will start by taking over the Okal Rel Saga and Okal Rel Legacies series from EDGE during a planned period of mentorship and transition of up to twelve months. "Then, once the infrastructure is in place, we'll start to branch out into other titles."
